Nasal Massage After Rhinoplasty

Nasal massage is performed by the surgeon when he believes that certain areas of the nose require controlled pressure to improve the final shape. Patients should not massage their noses themselves.

Nasal Massage Is Recommended Only When Excessive Swelling Develops in the Bony Area and Faster Reduction of Swelling Is Needed
It must be stated that massaging the nose after rhinoplasty has no scientific basis. In other words, it has not been scientifically proven that massage after surgery is beneficial. In fact, in some cases, manipulation of the nose by the patient and applying pressure in various directions can increase nasal swelling and even alter the surgical result. Therefore, we do not currently recommend any massage after surgery, unless it is performed by the surgeon themselves.

Nasal Massage by the Surgeon

Nasal massage by the surgeon is performed in cases where they feel certain points on the nose require pressure to improve the shape. In such cases, massage is acceptable. However, giving instructions to the patient to massage the nose at home using a specific method has no scientific basis.

The Only Case Where Massage by the Patient is Allowed

Of course, for patients who are one year post-operation and intend to have revision surgery, massaging the nose can be beneficial. These individuals are advised to move the nasal skin in different directions for a few months before the surgery to loosen the skin, so it can be lifted from the nasal skeleton with greater ease.
But for those who have recently undergone rhinoplasty, the idea that nasal massage helps reduce swelling faster has no scientific basis. Massage is only permitted on specific points of the nose where the surgeon prefers pressure to be applied. For example, it may be useful in limited cases to reduce nasal deviation or bumps, but prescribing a general massage instruction for every patient who undergoes surgery is not acceptable.

Video: Watch the Correct and Incorrect Methods of Nasal Massage After Surgery!

In this educational video prepared by Dr. Hosnani, the correct and incorrect methods of nasal massage after surgery are shown side-by-side for comparison so that patients can clearly understand the differences. In the upper part of the image, the correct method is shown, where two fingers are placed carefully on the upper and bony part of the nose (the hard part), applying gentle, uniform pressure without unnecessary movement. This pressure helps reduce swelling in the bony area without causing damage to the nasal structure. In contrast, the lower part of the image shows the incorrect method, where the person rotates their fingers or separates the skin from the bone, performing movements that can damage the nasal structure, create irregularities, or even cause unwanted indentations in the bony area. This visual guide helps patients understand the correct method with confidence and perform it only if necessary, without causing harm.
